(Video) NFL: Terrell Owens Appears On Dr.Phil

Terrell Owens was on the Dr. Phil show yesterday afternoon, along with three women who say the former NFL star is behind on child-support payments.  Tom Weir at USA Today breaks down what happened on the show (along with a couple video clips)

Here’s how it went down:

Dr. Phil (Phil McGraw) took it easy on T.O. early on. He said he’s a big fan of Owens — on the field — and that he thinks some critics have been too hard on him.

He also read an introduction Owens wrote for a children’s book, which began: “To my children, may my life serve as an example to you.”

But when the first wife came on — identified only as Kimber — she said he has seen their daughter only about 12 times.

“He doesn’t call, he doesn’t send Christmas gifts,” Kimber said.

Owens was asked if it was true that a year had passed since he last saw the 7-year-old girl, and he said he wasn’t sure how long it had been.

“The thing is, with me traveling back and forth, I don’t have a set schedule,” Owens said, adding that when he had reached out that, “Pretty much 90% of the time every time I’ve reached out it’s been a bad time.”

Two more women with whom Owens had children are scheduled to appear. Owens said he had four children with four different women.

“No, it wasn’t a plan,” he told Dr. Phil. “I was irresponsible in that regard.”

UPDATE at 4:32 ET: Wife No. 2, Melanie, is on, and says she can’t ever get in touch with Owens. Owens says about a year has passed since he has seen that daughter. Owens makes the case that the last planned visit with the girl didn’t come off because Melanie insisted that he pay for her plane ticket, in addition to his daughter’s.

Owens also says that he is trying to have the amounts of his child support payments reduced. The amounts, he said, are: monthly payments of $20,000, $13,400, $11,200 and $5,000 — a total of nearly $50,000.

UPDATE at 4:42 ET: Mother No. 3 is on. Monique is the mother of Owens’ oldest son. She says her pregnancy was an oops kind of thing. Dr. Phil is finding it hard to believe that all three women didn’t take better precautions.

Owens says he willingly increased her child support, from $6,000 to $8,000 to $10,000 to $12,000. Monique says Owens made some public appearances with their son, trying to bolster his image.

“He was trying to exploit his kid,” she says.

UPDATE at 4:50 ET: Owens is talking about his childhood, and how his father never came to his games. “It made me sad,” Owens says. “I didn’t know who my daddy was until I was 10 or 12. Surprising as it may seem, he was living right across the street.”

UPDATE at 4:54 ET: Lecture time from Dr. Phil. He tells Owens that, “You have an opportunity, because it’s not too late.”

To the three mothers he says: “If you do anything aggressively or passive aggressively . . . to block his relationship with his children . . . trust me, the day will come when it will bite you in an ugly, ugly way.”

And to all of them, Dr. Phil admonishes that “you can’t get blood from a turnip” and that: “You guys need to stop these hostilities, because it’s your child who’s picking up the tab for that.”

There might be a little bit of a happy ending coming, because Dr. Phil says that Owens’ two daughters are backstage, and everyone agrees Owens will see them when the show is over.

UPDATE at 5:00 ET: Dr. Phil signs off and tells his audience that if anyone if having the kinds of problems Owens and the three mothers are having, “Every situation needs a hero. Step up and be that person.”

While the credits roll the cameras focus on Owens, off the stage, getting together with his two daughters. He asks them: “Have you been to Magic Mountain? Maybe I can take you guys to Magic Mountain. You can ride the roller coaster.”

He kisses both on the cheek and tells them “I love you” as the show winds up.
