So Sad: Hikers Die At National Monument
A Husband and wife passed away while hiking an infamous natural rock formation. They hiked the area due to a lottery, which they won. Hit the jump for more details.
Ulrich Wahli was 70 and his wife Patricia was 69 when they died hiking the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. Located in Arizona, the couple died at the rock formation people call,The Wave, most likely from heat exhaustion. Chances are as low as ten percent, when it comes to winning a permit lottery to hike The Wave.
Speaking on the tragedy, Kane County sheriff’s Sgt. Alan Alldredge said, “Only a few juniper trees provide shade along the open route. Add that to the high heat we are experiencing right now, and it makes for a lethal combination. If you must hike, it is best to do it early in the morning, and make sure you have enough water and supplies.”
Temperatures reached as high as 106 degrees on Wednesday. Officials don’t know the cause of Ulrich and Patricia Wahli’s death as of now, and they are still reviewing it. The couple were 250 yards apart: Patricia was under a tree and Ulrich was found in the open.
They passed away at the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument were few get to see. Rest In Peace to the couple.
