The Grammy’s Highlights: Sam Smith Is The Big Winner, Who Is Beck And More

The Grammy’s highlights are the best. Although The Walking Dead took me out of my skin for a moment, following the death of our beloved baby-sitter Tyreese, I was able to pull myself together and partake in the festivities of the 57th Grammy Awards – like many others, via social media. I came in just in time to get a glimpse of some of the evenings best moments. Moments like Sam Smith performing with Mary J. Blige, J. Hud – while looking magnificent – shaking in her heels and Josh Duhamel almost falling on his face. This was some good stuff. My top five moments of the 57th Grammy Awards ceremony, after the jump.

There were so many highlights. It was very difficult to narrow them down to just five, but these are the moments that put a smile on my face.

5. Annie Lennox took old lady dancing to church.
Hozier’s latest single, “Take Me to Church” caught my ear a time or two. The Irish musician and of course, singer/songwriter hit the stage to perform the hit song, but that wasn’t the highlight. The Grammy’s highlight, “Ladies and gentleman,” Annie Lennox. The 64-year-old used an air-harmonica to add to the mash-up of “Take Me to Church” and “I Put a Spell on You“. She then went on to gyrate and pelvic thrust those lil hips of hers. While some would choose not to see the old-school-icon zone out into a set of sexy moves, I say if you got it, flaunt it (no matter how funny).

4. Taylor Swift forever gets her life.
The “Shake it Off” queen just enjoys performing. It seems like during every award show, Taylor Swift – whom I give the best dressed – gets caught enjoying the sounds of her peers. The same goes for the Grammys. The highlight; Pharrell starring Taylor down in the process will forever be a classic. Honey, be happy.

3. Who is Beck?
Some music lovers tend to stick to one or two genres of music, and plug their ears for others. This being the reason why I found no huge surprise in last night’s trending topic, ‘Who is Beck’. I understand, yes, these award shows have a way of neglecting hip hop and yes, as the listeners, we want our favorite artists to win, but let’s not push aside artists who have worked on their craft, simply because it’s not your cup of tea. After winning ‘Album of the Year’ for Morning Phase, Beck forced Beyoncé’s hive to start a petition – The Kanyeness is strong in the hive. And, (double Grammy’s highlight) had Kanye attempt to run down on his win, which Beck has since responded to.

So, who is Beck? I find it fun to read up on these type of artists.

2. Glory!
Again, Common and John Legend moves their audience. The two performed the Selma soundtrack and Golden Globe winning single, “Glory”. The inspiring performance that gave out chills allow listeners to reflect on the civil rights movements and more recently, the controversy around the death of Mike Brown. “Now is our time,” Common said as the music came to a stop and The Grammys to an end. Loved it.

1. FOUR.
Sam Smith took the night. The more than once remixed, “Stay With Me” from the English singer/songwriter’s debut album, In The Lonely Hour served as the evening’s theme song. Speech after speech opened viewers eyes into the new artists life. “I want to thank the man who this record is about who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys.” We’re sure that ex-beau is out there crying his eyeballs out right about now. In what he calls, “the best night of my life,” Smith took home four Grammy award trophies, all well deserved.

Extra: Something that makes you say, hmmm… The best quote of the evening came from the afro-wearing, orange-suit shinning star himself, Prince. “Albums …remember those? Albums still matter. Like books and black lives, albums still matter.”
