Meek Mill Talks About Nicki Minaj, Rap Beefs And Why He’s ‘Scared To Be Political’

Meek Mill has been the center of attention for the past few weeks, starting off with his wildly open and romantic relationship with rap queen Nicki Minaj and ending with his beef with Drake, not to mention his problems when it comes to the law. Recently the Philly native sat down with Billboard magazine to talk about everything that’s being going on his life.

Flooding the internet are photos and videos of the infamous kiss and PDA shared on stage between rapper Meek Mill and his girl Nicki Minaj during The Pink Print Tour Dallas show. ‘Omeeka’ seems to be setting the new standard for the ever popular hashtag #RelationshipGoals between their PDA, heart shaped diamond rings and their steamy new video for their duet ‘All Eyes On You ‘ However, their relationship may be causing more problems than can be seen on the surface.

One issue that’s blatantly obvious is the fact Meek’s relationship with Nicki Minaj has been fuel to the fire of quite a few rap beefs. First between Meek and Joe Budden, where Budden accused Meek of being soft. Meek told Billboard there’s no reason to think his relationship has affected his music. He said, “You can’t be hard all the time, man,” adding, “There’s both sides to everything. What’s wrong with it? Jay Z was a street rapper and he had a girlfriend.”

However, Joe Budden isn’t the only one who feels that way. After Meek accused Drake of having ghostwriters, Drake put out the diss track that also commented on his relationship with Nicki Minaj. In his song ‘Charged Up’, Drake claimed Ms. Minaj had Meek ‘starstruck.’ Meek had no comments for the magazine about the diss track but during his show at the Barclays center he said to the crowd, “Everyone, meet the woman who ‘got me starstruck,'” acknowledging Drake’s lyrics.

Below the surface, Meek revealed that his business and personal relationship with Nicki Minaj suffered briefly because of their ‘All Eyes On You’ duet. He said, “She wanted it to be my single, and I didn’t,” he continued, “It turned into an ego argument.” Meek continues, proving that her success is not a threat to him, “She killed me on that song,” adding, “but I don’t really care. When my girl do better than me, I still win. When I do better than her, she still wins.” The video for their song just debuted at No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100.

When questioned about her 2014 hit featuring Drake and Lil Wayne ‘Only’ Meek can only frown about the lusty lyrics Nicki’s lablemates rap about her he claims, “She wasn’t my girl then, but now she wouldn’t even had did that.”

Taking it over to more serious issues, Meek opens up about his time spent in jail and is experiences with police brutality. He said When he was 18 he was caught with guns by police they brought him in his house and “beat the shit out of me.” He said, “[I had] a concussion, stitches, braids ripped out. My blood was on the ceiling, on the floor.” Fast forward to 2014, Meek was thrown back in jail for violating his 5-year probation. He describes the experience, “Imagine being locked in your bathroom 23 hours a day,” he added, “That’s the closest I ever came to losing my mind. You’re talking to yourself, playing games with the birds in the window. It’s hell.”

Although the Philly rapper has experience with police brutality and can relate to the issues dominating the news, he says he’s fearful of using his position to speak openly. “I’m scared to be political,” he continues, “You get too powerful and more people try to take you out. My son ain’t trying to hear that his dad got put away because he was fighting for the country.”

Sound off in the comments with your thoughts on Meek Mill and check out the full interview between Billboard and Meek Mill when it hit stands August 8th. Also, be sure to check out Nicki Minaj at the Billboard Hot 100 Music Festival, August 22-23 in New York.

he’s so ignorant. Fighting for political justice IS fighting for your son, you idiot. those rollies and benz cant stop your son from becoming another victim. That should be a priority, not weather Drake writes his own rhymes. I swear, these “celebs” need some type of guidance counseling before doing interviews smh

  6. Diamond on July 30, 2015 at 11:27 am

If you ask me both are good, so what is the point of beefing? When Pac and Biggie were around I like both of their music. They both had different sounds. With all this other ish going on in the world they both need to grow up, like seriously.
