Airline Kicks Family Off Flight, Calls Them “Animals”

A family of nine on their way to Dominican Republic got kicked off their JFK flight yesterday. During boarding, one member of the family took about half an hour to stow his bag in the overhead compartment. He challenged the flight attendant when she asked him to have a seat.

She felt unsafe and threatened, so she had the entire Kimchy family removed from the Jet Blue flight. Hit the jump to find out exactly why she called them “animals.”

Anyone who has ever been on a plane before knows how to put their bag in the overhead compartment. It’s really not that difficult. Just put the bag in an empty space and sit down. Keren Kimchy’s husband apparently needed some practice. He took the entire boarding process, about half an hour, and still did not finish putting his bag overhead.

The family did not fly out yesterday. However, Jet Blue agreed to book them on another flight to Punta Cana for today.

It seems Mr. Kimchy was fiddling around with something in his bag. The flight attendant asked him nicely to stow it and sit down while people were still boarding. When after the boarding process ended Kimchy still stood there stowing his bag, the flight attendant repeated herself. He still did not sit down and kept rummaging around in his bag.

This would make anyone nervous. So, the stewardess had Kimchy and his family removed from the plane. Jet Blue said, “We love welcoming families on JetBlue, and we fly thousands of families every day without incident. The decision to remove someone from a flight is never taken lightly and happens only if it is clear that the customer poses a risk to the safe and comfortable operation of the flight.”

Granted, the stewardess did call the family “animals” over the loud speaker in her final address of the situation. But, would you feel comfortable if this man was on your flight? Where is the line between patiently allowing a passenger to stow his bag- and starting to think he is doing something he should not be?
