NBA: Kristaps Porzingis Shares His Thoughts On Trump, His Favorite NY Slang Terms & More

As far as sports superstars go, New York currently belongs to Odell Beckham Jr and Carmelo Anthony but that is already starting to change with the emergence of Kristaps Porzingis. The second year player for the Knicks is averaging just over 21 points, while grabbing almost 8 boards and blocking two shots per game. He’s also doing what while shooting an impressive 40% from three point land. A day after a recent game in Minnesota, the “Unicorn” spoke with Complex Sports and they touched on quite a few subjects including his thoughts on Donald Trump, Latvian rappers and much more.

Complex caught up with KP at the new Adidas flagship store in Midtown Manhattan. They didn’t have too much time with him but still came away with a great piece.

Being that Porzingis was born outside of the United States, he was asked how he feels about the current political climate after Donald Trump was elected as our next president.

Honestly, I didn’t follow it that much. I don’t really know the positive things and the negative things that this whole thing has but, anyway, you have to give him a chance, you know? People are saying like [the] same thing with me—they booed me at first, you know? [Laughs.] So you never know. You know, you have to give him a chance. [But] I don’t try to get involved in the political things too much, that can only cause trouble for me.

I’m sure there will be some people who try and get on him for seeming like he supports Trump but that’s not really what he is saying. If we can only so be lucky that having Trump as the president will work out as good as Porzingis has with the Knicks after he was booed.

KP has a huge love of music and hip hop to be exact. He is constantly retweeting things from Latvian rappers and he was asked about the difference in the music, or if there is anything to learn from it.

I don’t know. I don’t know if you can learn much. You know, we’re not on that level yet but I enjoy the music that they make. I understand all the lyrics. Sometimes it’s hard for me to understand what [American rappers] are saying exactly in the song—some expressions or something like that—so that’s why I enjoy it so much. It reminds me of back home.

Staying on the music topic, if he had the ability to have walk-up or entrance music, he says it would have to be something from Future. “Oooh, that’s a tough one. I would really, really have to think about it. Something aggressive to get me hype before the game. Maybe something from Future”.

Being that he will likely be residing in New York for many years to come, he was asked to share some of his favorite slang terms that he’s picked up since being here. He was presented a list with many options such as “deadass”, facts, wavy, son and many other philosophical terms but he went with “FOH”, “B” (iconic) and “Hype”. I don’t know about “hype” but I’m fully with him on the other two. I just hope he’s with the Knicks long enough for another entire wave of slang terms in the future.
