Tech Talk News: Pirate Bay Says Swedish Police Planning Another Raid
The operators of The Pirate Bay believe Swedish authorities are preparing to raid the torrent site for the second time in the past six years. Swedish police previously raided a Stockholm data center run by the site in 2006.
Now, following a second investigation of The Pirate Bay initiated in 2010, the site’s operators told TorrentFreak Friday that they recently learned that Swedish investigators have acquired warrants for a potential repeat of the 2006 police action, which resulted in the 2009 conviction of four Pirate Bay founders for copyright infringement.
“The Swedish district attorney Fredrik Ingblad initiated a new investigation into The Pirate Bay back in 2010,” The Pirate Bay operators wrote in a Friday blog post. “Information has been leaked to us every now and then by multiple sources, almost on a regular basis. It’s an interesting read.”
In early February, Sweden’s Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal from Peter Sunde, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Fredrik Neij, and Carl Lundstrom, who were found guilty of copyright infringement, sentenced to one year in prison, and hit with fines of about $32 million Swedish kroner (about $4.5 million) for their involvement in The Pirate Bay P2P site.
This time around, Pirate Bay operators say they have taken steps to insulate themselves from similar charges and are also preparing ways to keep the site online in the event of another raid, according to TorrentFreak.
Following a U.K. high court ruling in late February that classified The Pirate Bay’s activities as facilitating copyright infringement, the site’s operators were publicly defiant but also began removing torrent files from the site and shifting towards so-called magnet links, a more modern way of sharing files via peer-to-peer networks that may help such activity go further underground and could prove more difficult for authorities to prosecute.
“As we’ve said before, the 29th of february is the last day we offer torrents in it’s [sic] current form,” site operators said last month on The Pirate Bay’s Facebook page. “Then it will be all magnets, which works pretty much the same. Before you go ‘oh ma goood why why why?!!!11’, please understand that it’s a necessary move in the saga known as The Pirate Bay. Not having torrents will be a bit cheaper for us but it will also make it harder for our common enemies to stop us (which they can’t. but everything that makes it harder for them brings more lolz to our lips).”
By transitioning the magnet links, “the entire site can now be reduced to a few hundred megabytes, small enough to fit on the tiniest thumb drive,” according to TorrentFreak. That serves two purposes, according to the blog—making it difficult for police to pull off a successful raid like the 2006 incursion (video of that raid is posted below) and ensuring that if it does get taken down, the entire site can be restored to the Internet quickly.
Another way The Pirate Bay has attempted to inoculate itself from police interference is with a change of their domain .org to .se to prevent U.S. officials from seizing thepiratebay.org as they did in January’s high-profile shutdown of Megaupload.
“Since our recent move to a .se domain the investigation has been cranked up a notch,” The Pirate Bay operators wrote in the blog post. “We think that the investigation is interesting considering nothing that TPB does is illegal. Rather we find it interesting that a country like Sweden is being so abused by lobbyists and that this can be kept up.
“They’re using scare tactics, putting pressure on the wrong people, like providers and users,” they added. “All out of fear from the big country in the west, and with an admiration for their big fancy wallets.”
Regardless of what happens next, The Pirate Bay team said it isn’t going anywhere.
“We’re staying put where we are,” they wrote. “We’re going no-where. But we have a message to hollywood, the investigators and the prosecutors: LOL.”
