Jackpot!! Swiss Farmer Finds 4,000 Ancient Roman Coins In His Yard
A farmer from Switzerland has discovered a whole trove of over 4,000 ancient Roman coins dug under his garden. How do these farmers keep getting so lucky?? Read the full story after the jump.
After further excavation and regional archeological help, the coins are thought to date about 1,700 years back to the reign of Emperor Aurelian in the year 274. Some of the other coins are believed to date back to Emperor Maximian’s reign in 294. The coins were found in Ueken, in the northern canton of Aargau, Switzerland, and there are exactly 4,166 of them.
According to Swiss law, the vegetable farmer had to turn the coins over to the Vindonissa de Brugg Museum to be put on display, but will likely receive a finder’s fee.
Archeologists say it is unusual to find more then 2,500 coins together and that this find is so unique it is a whole new category of coins.
Questions arise to as why the bronze and silver fortune was never taken back by the owner. Theories are speculating that whoever hid their coins underground, likely either got ill and passed away, was not able to come back to retrieve them, or couldn’t find them after the initial burial.
The owner is believed to be either a landowner or tradesman who lived in the area for years and put his future fortune aside for whatever reason.
