AND NOW…..
Tim C. “Today, we’re taking it to the next level, making a huge leap. We have some very exciting news to tell you about iPhone.”

Phil S. Hits the Stage
“We’re here to talk about the iPhone. We launched the first iPhone in 2007, and what an incredible breakthrough it was for the entire industry.”

“Each and every year we introduce new versions with new features… each time setting the gold standard”

“So, iPhone 5. It is made entirely of glass and aluminum. It’s designed and built to an exacting level of standard unlike anything we, or anyone in our industry, have made before.”

“I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that the hardware and software engineering that has gone into this product is unlike we’ve ever undertaken before.”

It’s the thinnest and lightest iPhone yet. 7.6mm thick, 18% thinner than before.

It’s the world’s thinnest smartphone, says Phil. Weighs 112 grams. 20% lighter than the 4S.

“Can you make a phone that has everything the iPhone 4S has, before you add new features, in a design that is smaller and lighter than the previous product.”

“The challenge is to make it better and smaller.”

It has five rows of icons, plus the four shortcuts on the bottom.

“What is the design center for a phone? It’s this… your hand.”

“As you carry your phone it should fit beautifully in your hand.”

All the first-party apps have been optimized to show a bit more stuff. In Calendar we see a full five-day workweek, now.

iWork apps have been updated too. Keynote, Pages, Numbers “all take advantage of this gorgeous display.”

iMovie and Garage Band too.

What about the old apps? They run letterboxed.

Phil is talking up the widescreen appeal for movies, which is nice. We’re closer to 16:9 now.
44% better color saturation, full SRGB rendering here.

Phil is saying that touch is integrated into the display, so it’s thinner and sharper, less glare in sunlight.
“We couldn’t be prouder of it.”

All that just for the display! Now, let’s talk wireless. “Ultrafast Wireless” they’re calling it.

GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO, HSPA, HSPA+, DC-HSDPA and LTE!
HSPA+ is 21Mbps, DC-HSDPA is 42Mbps, and LTE is a max of 100.
Single chip for voice and data, and a single radio chip as well.

“And we have a really unique innovation with a dynamic antenna… it can automatically switch antenna connections.” Similar to how the 4S worked.

In the US: Sprint, AT&T and Verizion. All will support LTE.
Canada: Rogers, Telus, Bell, Fido, Virgin…
Asia: KDDI SoftBan, KT, SK telecom, SmartTone…
In Europe it’ll be on DT and EE.

Those are for LTE, but the dual-carrier networks are many across all of Europe.

There’s also 802.11a/b/g/n, and it’s dual-channel, up to 150Mbps.

A6 Chip!! New chip, the A6! 2X faster CPU and 2x graphics compared to the A5 — is this compared to the A5 or A5X?

22% smaller, too, and more energy-efficient.

Pages is said to launch 2.1X faster than before. Keynote attachments load 1.7X faster.
GAMING:
Rob Murray from EA is up to show us some gameplay action on the iPhone 5!

He’s going to show us the “ultimate racing experience on iOS” — it’s Real Racing 3.

“You’re going to see the Porsche GT3 racing on the legendary raceway, Laguna Seca.”
Interesting, we’re seeing a two-player race — but an asynchronous race. “Time-shifted multiplayer” it’s called.

“This is Real Racing 3 for the powerful new iPhone.” It’s coming later this year.

Battery life!

“What [our team] has done is not only match but exceed the battery life of the iPhone 4S.”
Battery life.

8 hours of 3G or LTE talk time or browsing. 10 hours on WiFi browsing.

CAMERA:
Now, camera. “If you know anything about camera design the biggest challenge is vertical height.” Going thinner compromises optics.

It’s an 8-megapixel, 3,264 x 2,448 backside-illuminated sensor, five-element lens and f/2.4 aperture. Same as the iPhone 4S but thinner.

Now there’s a dynamic low light mode. It evaluates nearby pixels to give up to 2 f-stops greater low-light performance.

There’s now a sapphire lens crystal cover — durable and clear.

And, there’s a new image processor in the A6 to reduce noise and includes a so-called “smart filter” to do better at color-matching.

“It’s really powerful to deliver amazing low-light photo capture.” And it’s 40% faster image capture!

The 4S was already about as fast as you could tap the screen…

There’s a new feature Shared Photo Streams. You can share a series of photos with friends and family to share and comment.

Panorama is official! Finally.
You sweep the scene vertically to get the most resolution, then just swing your phone.
It’s a 28 megapixel resulting image!

Even if you weave or shake a bit it’ll smooth things out and remove any crazy artifacts if someone moves.

“While the camera is amazing for taking pictures, it’s also a lot better for video as well.”
It’s 1080p still but with better video stabilization, and there’s facial recognition. You can grab photos, too, still.

The front-facing camera is now 720p, backside illuminated.

FaceTime over cellular networks! All cellular networks? Phil didn’t specify…

AUDIO:
The audio system – there are three microphones. Front, bottom, and back.

This is for voice recognition and noise cancelation.
The speaker has a five-magnet transducer. That’s three more magnets in your transducer. Each one a mystery.

And there’s something Phil is calling “wideband audio.”

Basically it’s a wider spectrum for audio.

So, your voice will sound more natural. It requires carrier partnership, 20 will support. He mentioned DT and Orange at launch.

CONNECTOR:

“The iPhone, from its start, has used the iPod’s connector.” This dates back 9 years!
“So many of the things we used to do over the wire we now do wirelessly.”

Bluetooth for audio, WiFi for AirPlay or syncing to iTunes, “and best of all with iCloud we can download all our content wirelessly.”

It’s called Lightning

“So now we have Thunderbolt and Lightning.”

You can plug it in either way, it’s all digital, 80% smaller. “It’s a huge difference in the world’s thinnest smartphone.”

Bose, JBL, B&W, B&O and others are already working on new docks and speakers.

Got old docks? “We’re creating a bunch of accessories to help you with that.”

It looks to be a little over an inch thick — definitely adding a lot of bulk to the whole thing.

iOS 6:

“What we’d like to do is have you see iOS 6 running on the new iPhone for the first time.”

We’re seeing the new Maps application, zooming in and out, rotating, etc.

“We’ve also built a search engine in so you can look at local points of interest.” There are 100 million.

We’re seeing the info card with info courtesy of Yelp.

Scott’s talking about Maps, which is my favorite thing of all time, but I can’t wipe the tears from eyes fast enough to enjoy it. The adapter thing… man, soul-crushing.

We’re seeing navigation, routing, and getting directions from Siri. All familiar stuff so far.

We’re zooming in, zooming out, seeing 3D buildings. It’s all perfectly smooth without the turn-by-turn navigations interrupted.

“We’ve also got great satellite imagery.” We’re seeing the flyover mode again, Satellite imagery wrapped around the 3D map of the city.
We’re seeing Safari, a new full-screen view similar to the desktop version. Just tap the arrows pointing at corners.
Surprise surprise, you can share your tabs from your desktop to your phone. It’s called iCloud Tabs.

“Next I’d like to show you some new enhancements to mail.”

You can mark people as a VIP, then whenever you get an email from them it’ll go right into a separate inbox.
iCloud tabs would be amazing… if the API hook would allow pulling tabs from Chrome and / or Firefox as well. (Safari is solid on mobile, but I still prefer other alternatives on the desktop.)

You can flag messages as well for follow up. Or, you can use Gmail.

Here we go, looking at Passbook now, seeing coupons and movie tickets.

a demo of the shared Photo Stream feature.
With just a few taps you can share and push them out.
I’ll tell you this: I’ll be the first to subscribe to Rick Ross and Ke$ha’s Shared Photo Streams in iOS 6.

They get a notification in their Photos app and, hey presto, your pics are on their phone. Keep it clean, kids.

Siri updates:
“How did the 49ers do last weekend?” And she responds with the score.

“Now Siri’s also learned a lot more about movies.” “Can you recommend a good movie in theaters?”
“That is a very subjective question. Here’s what others have found to be good movies.” It shows Rotten Tomatoes ratings, which are my favorite way of deciding which bit of fluff I should see in theaters.
You can find restaurants and then choose to make reservations, which pops you right into the Open Table app. This is the sort of integration Windows Phone has been offering for awhile, jumping right into relevant apps.

“There are some great enhancements to the phone app, including the ability to send an SMS or iMessage back if you can’t take the call.”

And again, Scott just mentioned taking a FaceTime call over the cellular network — again no mention whether this is supported on all carriers, but it certainly sounds that way.

Phil is Back!!!

“The most advanced operating system in any mobile device.”

Two colors! Black or white front.

The white version has a raw aluminum back. The black one has the black anodized backing.
“iPhone 5 is now the best phone we’ve ever made, and what would be a great phone without a killer video?”

Video time again, it’s Jony Ive up first. “With this unique relationship with your iPhone, we take changing it very seriously.”
“For the first time ever we’ve increased the size of the display. By making the screen taller, but not wider, you can still comfortably use it with one hand.”

Bob Mansfield. “It took an incredible cross-collaborative effort to do this.” This being making the phone 18% thinner.

“LTE can actually be faster than the average WiFi connection at home.” That, of course, depends on your broadband connection — LTE is indeed faster than cable in most markets.

Bob is saying “You’ll experience a big increase in speed in everything you use your iPhone for” thanks to the A6 chip.

Interesting that this video touts LTE as “potentially faster than a Wi-Fi connection.” While true, encouraging people to hop on LTE, maybe even instead of Wi-Fi, seems a little crazy. As in, potentially crippling for networks.
He’s talking up the Lightning connector, which is thinner and more durable. And, of course, double-sided.

Yup, they just touted the iPhone 5’s display as being better for widescreen videos. It’s way closer to 16:9, and it’s the only obvious argument for shifting away from the aspect ratio Apple has relied on the past five years.
Jony is back, talking about the manufacturing process, how they create the textured ring vs. the almost mirrored chamfered edge.
“The variances from product to product we now measure in microns.” Cameras actually take images of each case and select the appropriate back plate to fit.

Phil is back as the video winds down.

PRICING:

Same price as the 4S. $199 for 16GB. $299 for 32GB, $399 for 64GB.(Contracts)

iPhone 4 is now free on contract! 4S is now $99.
“Best phones at every price point” says Phil.

Pre-orders start on Friday the 14th. Shipping on September 21st int he US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapre.
20 more countries next month.
“This will be our fastest phone roll-out ever.”
iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, 3GS, new iPad, iPad 2 and iPod touch all are getting iOS 6.
That drops on September 19th.
Tim C. Is Back
“iPhone 5 and iOS 6, the biggest things to happen for iPhone since iCloud. I am so incredibly proud of everyone at Apple.”

“In addition to announcing iPhone 5 we have something near and dear to our hearts to talk to you about today, and that is music.”

“Apple loves creating music products. Apple is deeply embedded in our DNA. This is the reason that we created iPod and iTunes, and these products have gone on to revolutionize the music industry.”

“Today we’re announcing some exciting changes with both iPod and iTunes.”

Starting with iTunes, and Eddy Cue is up.

iTunes UPDATE:

26 million songs in iTunes, 20 billion songs purchased since its launch 9 years ago.

The iTunes store is now available in 63 countries.

435 million iTunes accounts, all with one-click purchasing.

60% of all downloads come directly from mobile devices.
Same for movies, TV shows, apps and books even.

When you’re previewing a song you can browse away and it’ll keep playing. You can share directly to Facebook and Twitter.

These tweaks come with iOS 6 on the 19th.

The Mac and PC clients are getting updated too. Eddy just called iTunes “the world’s most popular media player.”

“It’s been a huge, huge hit.” Over 200 million people are using iTunes in the Cloud. 15 billion pieces of content have been served directly from the cloud.

The new iTunes is “dramatically simpler” says Eddy.

It’s basically a big grid now, much more simplified user interface.

Click on any album and the window splits, expanding to show the tracks.

The album cover is shown on the side with a colored backing. Click on any song and… it plays!

Click the new “in the store” button and you can hop right to the store to buy more stuff.

Managing playlists is a lot easier now. You can quickly hop back to your library without closing the playlist and then just drag and drop tracks to where you want them.

Interesting, whenever you click on a song or album and start to drag it the app automatically brings up a list of your playlists, so that you can add it.

There’s a new “coming next” button that you can use to change the order of upcoming tracks.

Or, anywhere in the interface you can click “Play Next” and it’ll enqueue the song to be the next one.
Searching is revised too. It shows results inline. Click on anything and it brings you to the album or playlist, or double-click in the search results to play.

There’s a new mini-player, very tiny and discrete.
It features a tiny little bit of album art along with basic controls. There’s search in there too.
Okay, now we’re looking at iCloud integration.
We’re diving over to the movies library. Movies with iCloud positions show a little cloud logo.

The store has the same interface we saw on the devices, with the carousel up top.

We just checked out Born to Run by The Boss. While a sample was playing we were able to click over to Bruce’s artist page, which now has concert dates.
Similar interface for apps, books, etc.
“Those are just a few of the new features in the new App Store.”

“The new iTunes will be available in late October.” After it hits iOS 6, apparently.

NEW iPOD’s:
Greg Joswick is now up to talk iPod.
Apple has sold over 350 million iPods.
“We don’t do this just for the numbers. iPod and music are part of the DNA of the company. We love music.”

iPod nano is first.
“We really wanted to take the chance to reinvent the nano.”

“We wanted to give it a really large display. We want to have really easy to use controls. We want to make it thin and light… and of course we’d want to give it the latest technologies like Lightning.”

It’s the seventh-generation iPod nano. “It’s by far the best Nano we’ve ever created.”

It’s super tiny but has a wider screen than before. Looks to have a tiny Home button. It’s 5.4mm, 38% thinner than the last Nano!

Despite that, it has big volume buttons with a third function for play/pause and track advancing.

2.5-inch display in the nano that’s multitouch.

Indeed, there’s a home button, and a new home screen with big (relatively big) buttons.

Seven colors, aluminum, black, purple, green, blue, yellow and red.

“It’s really beautiful, and of course that bigger screen is great for experiencing your music even better.”

There’s an FM tuner with DVR functionality — pausing and rewinding.
Plus you can look at photos and video, too.

There’s fitness and a pedometer built in, so no accessories needed for Nike+.

Bluetooth now! So, wireless audio streaming is enabled.

And, no shocker, it has the Lightning connector, which plugs in to the left side of the bottom.

30 hours of music playback, the longest battery life of any nano! Doesn’t look to offer any sort of app support, though.

iPod touch:
“It’s the world’s most popular music player… but a lot of people don’t realize that it’s also the world’s most popular videogame player as well.”
175,000 games available, 150 million players in Game Center.

Time for the 5th generation — “It’s the best iPod touch we’ve ever made.”

Just 6.1mm thick, 88 grams in weight, looks to offer similar styling as before but slightly more squared back.

It’s aluminum on the back with a brushed finish — no more chrome to get scratched up.

There’s a speaker on the bottom plus the Lightning connector and the headphone jack. And, yes, it’s the iPhone 5 display!

“Perfectly matched for widescreen video using every pixel of that display.”

It’s now rocking the A5 processor, so it finally steps up to dual-core processing.
That’s said to offer “7x faster” graphics than the old iPod touch, and to show that it’s time to get a game demo.

a game called “Clumsy Ninja” — an “interactive toy.”
“Clumsy Ninja is self-aware, aware of his environment, and fully interactive.”

As you tap you can drag him around and the ninja looks… concerned to put it mildly.

This is like Nintendogs — for ninjas. Genius? Tim S. for EG

Okay, time for some training. “The more we play with him the better he becomes at punching the punch bag.”

“Clumsy Ninja is looking forward to playing with you this holiday season.”
Up to 40 hours of music playback in the touch, 8 hours of video. Slightly increased over the 4th gen Touch.

And, a new camera too:

It’s a five megapixel iSight camera. Backside illuminated, f/2.4, five element lens and that same sapphire crystal lens cover.

It, too, has the panorama feature, which nobody has mentioned about appearing on the 4S…

Mystery button on the back of the iPod. It’s called the iPod touch loop.
You can attach a little wrist strap to the back if you like, “for the added security when you’re taking pictures or just walking around town.”

1080p video now with image stabilization and you can use iMovie right on there.
Also a 720p camera for the FaceTime HD camera on the front.

Interesting — makes this more like a consumer compact camera. That’s included with the iPod.

no 4G wireless for the iPod touch.

BUT Siri will be supported on the iPod touch!

“The iPod touch is better now in every way.”
Five colors — raw aluminum, black, blue, yellow and red.
“This is our new iPod lineup for the holidays.” No pricing announced.
Speakers:

“We want to turn our attention to something different, and that’s speakers.”

New earbuds are next. Over 600 million sets of earbuds have been shipped. That’s over 1.2 billion “little speakers”
“Doing a great headphone is hard, because ears are really, really challenging, because everyone’s ears are different.”

EarPods is the name:

“They look like no earphone you’ve ever seen before.” Actually, we saw these in some leaked photos about a week back, but indeed they are distinctively designed.

It has a directed speaker port that points forward into your ear canal.

“The shape of the EarPod is actually defined by the geometry of your ear, but they don’t create a seal the way other in-ear headphones do.”

There’s a port in the back for mid-tones, a port in the stem and of course the main port pointing into your ear. All are said to maximize airflow for sound quality.

These will be shipping starting today, if you want to buy them standalone. They’re included with the new iPod touch, the new iPod nano and with the new iPhone 5. Not with the shuffle, though?

iPod Pricing:
pricing. 2GB Shuffle is $49 still.
iPod nano is 16GB for $149.
4th gen iPod touch stays around, 16GB for $199 or 32GB for $249.
5th gen iPod touch 32GB is $299 or 64GB for $399.

New nano and touch are available in October.
“The best iPods we’ve ever done.”

There are (PRODUCT) RED models for each of these devices too, so giving something back.

Tim Cook Wrap Up:

“So that’s iPod and iTunes. They are a great duo.”
“We do love music and we love this new lineup of iPods. We’re so excited that we create an ad, and we’d like to run it for you this morning.”

It shows iPods of all shapes and colors bouncing around, dancing and rocking. It’s got a beat and we can dance to it.

“A whole new lineup of all-new music players.”

“A completely new iTunes with a redesigned music player, seamless integration with iCloud”

“And iPhone 5. The thinnest, fastest and best iPhone we have ever shipped. Powered by iPhone 6.”

“When you look at each of these, they are incredible industry-leading innovations by themselves. But what sets them apart, and what sets us so far ahead of the competition, is how they work together.”

“Only Apple could integrate these services and bring them all together… Apple has never been stronger, and that is thanks to the dedication and creativity of our employees throughout the world.”

“They are doing the best work of their lives, because delivering revolutionary products making a real difference in people’s lives.”

Apple Presents Foo Fighters!!

“They’re not only one of the most popular bands in the world, they’re one of the most talented.”

“If you haven’t seen them before, you’re about to discover why.”

Foo Fighter Performance

“One of the great things about being here is getting to meet all these people. All these incredible people who are shaping our feature. Just like when you get to meet someone… you realize these are just flesh and bone. They’re just people, and it’s totally inspiring.”

“This one’s dedicated to all those people.”

“There goes my hero. He’s ordinary.”
Tim Cook Is Back:

“I hope you guys are as excited as we are.”

And That’s It!!!!!
